Denis Villeneuve Teases His Plans for ‘Dune 3’: ‘There Are Words on Paper’
Denis Villeneuve has envisioned an epic two-part movie experience for his adaptation of Dune. In 2021, the first movie succeeded at the box office with $401 million worldwide, leading to a greenlighted and now almost in theaters Part Two. But as for Dune, the story is far from finished.
Following the 1965 original novel, author Frank Herbert has written five sequels before his son and author Kevin J. Anderson picked up the torch following his death. Villeneuve’s two-part movie experience only covers events in the original novel. With his original vision close to the finish line, the director has been doing some thinking about the future.
In fact, he now has his eyes on a trilogy.
“If I succeed in making a trilogy, that would be the dream,” he told Empire.
Dune: Part Three would go into events in Dune Messiah, the direct sequel to the original novel. Speaking about the sequel, the director revealed that he has already given it some serious thought. “Dune Messiah was written in reaction to the fact that people perceived Paul Atreides as a hero, which is not what he wanted to do,” he remarked. “My adaptation is closer to his idea that it’s actually a warning.”
In fact, they are not just ideas. “I will say, there are words on paper.” If Dune: Part Two performs well at the box office, viewers might be able to see it on the big screen.
However, Villeneuve’s plan doesn’t go beyond Part Three but to end his journey there. “After that, the books become more…esoteric.”
Dune: Part Two has been delayed to release on March 15. 2024 due to the ongoing strike in Hollywood.
