‘Barbie’ Sets IMAX Release With New Post-Credits Footage
Just over a month into its theatrical run, Barbie has become the year's highest-grossing domestic release. Warner Bros. has set a limited one-week Imax run for the film, featuring never-seen-before post-credits footage. The plans will be carried out in North America and selected international territories, beginning on Sept. 22.
“We made Barbie for the big screen, so it’s a thrill to be able to bring it to Imax, the biggest screen of all,” said Greta Gerwig in a joint statement with Warner Bros. executives on Wednesday afternoon.
Currently, Gerwig’s fantasy-comedy has scored $575.4 million at the domestic box office and $1.3 billion worldwide. The film initially lost out on premium formats to Oppenheimer, but its popularity quickly overtook the box office. At this rate, Barbie is expected to eclipse the $1.359 billion global record set by The Super Mario Bros. Movies to become the highest-grossing release this year. On top of that, Gerwig, the Oscar-nominated director behind “Lady Bird,” has broken several box office records and became the highest-grossing female director at the domestic box office.
