YESLA On the Making Of “Oh Yeah”

What was the creative process like for this particular single?

I work with JHNY WZDM regularly but this one was a little different, I had the itch to make something fun and uptempo and I just dug in to what made me feel awesome. The creative took no time and I was able to tap in to a flow state that fired this song out of me like a cannon ball. Before we knew it we were recording and mixing. Planning the release and gathering assets took far longer than making the song.

Can you describe the emotions or feelings you hope "Oh Yeah" evokes in listeners?

Joy, Excitement, and a feeling of owning more than just accepting your life. Anything great can happen at any moment and I think far too often we only give that reputation to catastrophe.

What do you like the best about this track?

Guitars, guitars, guitars! The gang vocals are a lot of fun too but hearing the guitars run wild is the most fun in this record.

Can you tell us about your musical background and what inspired you to become a vocalist?

I went to Berklee College of Music and have been singing most of my life, I have always been a vocalist having sung in choirs all through school and even singing for Oprah, what inspires me most to make my music is the power I feel from taking ideas and turning them in to rhythms and riffs that make people feel something.

What are some key elements that, in your opinion, make a collaboration successful?

Trust, confidence, experience, you really have to understand the purpose and place a collaborator is coming from and once that's established have the trust to focus on the goal which with JHNY and I is always what's best for the record and not let ego on any side play a part.
