Feature: Shanay Morant Decodes ‘The Elements of NaySoul Vol.1’
How does 'The Elements of NaySoul Vol.1' reflect your musical journey and growth as an artist?
Honestly, I have this sense of relief because it took me 2 years and 8 months to complete. The first 2 years were filled with fears and doubts about my capabilities. It took some time but I pushed myself to overcome all the anxiety and go after what I wanted. Within 8 months I was able to finish the EP. Taking leaps like this has changed not just my musical journey but my life in general.
How did you work with the producer or engineers to bring your vision for this EP to life?
The production process was very unorthodox. I created a lot of demos that could potentially make the cut. When I met up with my engineer Lucho, we worked together to elevate each demo to its highest potential. Being a new producer, it was so thrilling to hear an accomplished engineer compliment my work and creativity. Our teamwork is why the music sounds like what it does today.
Which song(s) from the EP do you think best represents your artistic vision?
I’d say “These Waters the Interlude.” There is just something special about it. Funny fact, it actually wasn’t supposed to be on the EP. I played it for a few friends of mine and they told me to turn it into an interlude.
Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how you got started in music?
I started recording music professionally in 2020. I was very determined to create music that I could enjoy. I stayed in the studio for about 2 years and I gradually learned how to make a record sound good. Getting to this level was great but the celebration was short-lived. I was yearning for more musically. I then decided to start producing and this EP is the result of my resolve.
Are there any specific themes or messages that you aim to convey through your music?
This EP is apart of a 4 EP project showcasing the 4 elements of nature through sound. I wanted to expose how those elements can relate to human emotions.
