‘Trashbag Poncho,’ a beat tape with 8 tracks on it, whose style is DIY factory installed dope I wouldn't say lo fi / / / / / / / / / / / Shout outs to any producer anywhere doing their thing. This record has many influences esp in terms of feel, "newer" stuff but also some newer classic, too, don't let me start naming names and piss someone off to have forgotten like DJ Frane, DJ Shadow, Kool Keith—you knew he made beats—whose direction this album title, ‘Trashbag Poncho,’ is most appreciatively pointing only this is internal as in within myself to respond to Keith's line from over 20 years ago, "your style is garbage bag," with such a fashion statement?? / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / Gosh I hope not any "proof of concept" here / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / It's more minimal than you thought it could be I think in a good way, and it sounds almost like music a for a cool old video game by perhaps a novel, art conceit. not sure if "That Cat," the sixth of eight instrumental DIY tracks, is even rappable but theres melodica where applicable, nevertheless a good break in the action and or piece de resistance is palpable . . . big THANKS to mastering engineer Jared Miller (the Filter Lab, MN) for maximizing this and for COVER ART BY JULIA ZIPPORAH!!!

‘Trashbag Poncho’

is the debut instrumental record by vidpoet aka Chris DeMento, in the hip hop realm more or less a beat tape and if you would freestyle over it I would be pretty glad [wink] about that. . . .
. . . as in, in one of his songs, Kool Keith reminds you "your style is garbage bag," so you wear it? Not that Kool Keith isn't an influence here, nor whoever else like Dr. Dre, etc et al like everybody anybody Timbaland, Dilla, lots of inspiration from newer-ish ppl like Knxledge, Mndsgn. . . .
. . . but this is kind of a vidpoet-sounding thing . . . in case you were curious, a DIY production all the way but not without some quality. if you thought indie hip hop was a thing like . . . or whatever you'd want to call ‘Trashbag Poncho’ in the end is just a weird little commuter joint
