RISE On the Making Of “Without You”

What was the creative process like for this particular song?

This came straight from the heart. Our original lead singer (my twin brother) died in late 2022. The creative process for this song came from this feeling of loss and grief…it’s a difficult theme but one we have had to face.

Was there any challenge that you encountered while making the track?

RISE toured extensively throughout the 80’s and gained quite a strong following. As with most bands, we eventually split up. Following the death of our original singer and bass player, the band decided to revisit the whole RISE project in 2023 and get the songs out for people to hear. The songs for our EP “Memories and Possibilities” is a mix of 3 original RISE songs and 3 new songs. The songs were recorded in Whitewood Studies, Liverpool across July to September of 2023. Getting the band together again was an obvious and extremely positive thing for us to experience following the tough times of 2022.

How do you feel "Without You" represents your artistic identity?

The song carries great energy; it’s classic RISE, which was always a mix of guitars and synths supporting strong vocal melodies. It’s one of our more straight forward songs (but this fits the driving beat we were going for). We do focus on melodic themes supported by clear rock influences.

Can you tell us more about you as a band?

RISE was formed in 1984 in Liverpool England. RISE gigged extensively across the UK and developed a strong rock following. The band eventually split up in 1989. We took a 34 year “break”. Following the untimely death of our original lead singer and bass player Steve Kinley in 2022, we reformed and used this as a way for the rest of the band to remember the happy, positive times we had over the years. We collaborated with the artist stayMellow who took over from Steve on the vocals, bass and some guitar.

More music is coming out in 2024.

What role do you feel emotions play in your music, and how do you channel them into your performances?

RISE was always driven by high-energy live performances, which were based around sound technical delivery. We chose to record the songs for the Memories and Possibilities in the same manner. We believe we have captured the band’s soul and feeling with this EP; we are genuinely proud of the result.
