What's the story behind this release?
Being a victim of gun violence at 7 months old ( NYTimes covered it) and growing up in the inner city , I spent most of my life in environments that could’ve easily put me in harms way again. I had a lot of friends and family that helped me get to where I am now, out of those dangerous environments. From growing up with a verbally and abusive father, my mother leaving my life early on and my childhood friend missing for the last few years, there’s been a lot to let go of. Music has always been an escape for me. I first made a song in 2008 in Atlanta, Georgia as a freshman in high school just messing around and ever since then....its been my life’s purpose. I went to cicely Tyson high school in East Orange, Nj where I studied TV/Film and I kept pursuing music. Recording finally paid off when I got signed to an independent record label while attending Rutgers University in New Jersey where I received my bachelor’s in psychology. After college, I worked in retail at Menlo Park Mall, NJ for 10 years until I realized that wasn’t for me. I decided to join the United States Air Force where I’m now stationed in Minot, ND, specializing in Public Affairs. I have quite a beautiful present, and an amazing future, but the danger and trauma from my past follows me in my mind. All the people that weren’t able to be as lucky as me, all the times I wasted my blessings, all the people I’ve hurt and been hurt by. I realized I had to let it all go. In my attempt to let the dark past go, I made this project as a reminder of how far I’ve come, and to not look backward.
Tell us what makes this release stand out and why it's significan
I am mixing and mastering my own tracks with little experience or teaching. I am merging different styles of music because I personally listen to all types of music. In fact, since I’ve been in North Dakota, I’ve been an open format DJ for the Dakota lounge and Sports on Tap in Minot, ND. I offer subject matter that is true to my experience, love, lust, struggle, heartbreak, innercity turmoil, god, family, and society at large.
Who influenced this release?
I am heavily influenced by A$AP Rocky, Schoolboy Q, Kendrick Lamar, Drake, and Mac Miller. I try to use the flows, and musical taste that I enjoy in their music as a canvas for what I create.
Do you have any recent or upcoming performances to highlight?
I DJ every weekend in Minot, North Dakota.
