Rasha Jay On the Making Of “SAY”

Can you tell us about the inspiration behind "SAY" and the story it tells?

Honestly, it was directly inspired after a phone call from a friend who had serious domestic troubles. I challenged her to act upon her thoughts, versus just talking. I decided to go with that idea after the phone call ended.

How did you approach the arrangement and composition of the music for this song?

This type of song could easily be melancholy however I wanted it to be driving, energetic, gritty and motivating! I wanted it to have a rock sense and made for live performing, which I love to do. I brought in Liza Light to be featured on guitar and my killer drummer friend, Huan Walker, to nail down what No New Lovers and I had planned out.

What impact do you hope "SAY" will have on your audience?

I hope it gets your heart pumping, I hope you walk, run, workout, jam out in your car, use it however you want to get you into action!

How did you get started in music, and what inspired you to become a singer-songwriter?

I wrote my first song at age 9, called "Turn Around." I've always been singing and writing, and really into creating new things.

What is your songwriting process like? How do you usually start crafting a new song?

It varies, I can be inspired by sounds, words that pop up in my head, situations, questions, everything! My songs start with me, at home, demoing them with some music before meeting up with my co-producers, No New Lovers, in LA.
