Tally Spear On the Making Of “Want To Want You”

Can you tell us about the inspiration behind "Want To Want You" and the story it tells?

I think we've all wished we could control our emotions over certain situations, and feel differently about someone or something. Sometimes, we can't help just not wanting to continue a relationship we're in, even when it's not the other person's fault. Who would we choose to fall in love with if we could control our emotions... and why? I think that's an interesting concept. This song explores confusion surrounding sexuality and emotions, I guess.

Were there any challenges or obstacles you faced while creating this single?

I was inspired by someone else's situation and story, and when writing this song, I had to put myself in their shoes, which is something I'm not used to doing as all my songs are usually very personal to me. That being said though, I related a lot to the situation, so it really wasn't that hard to get into their frame of mind..

How does "Want To Want You" fit into your overall artistic vision?

My artistic vision is constantly evolving and moving, never staying still for too long, and I think each song I make has it's own unique personality in terms of where it fits in that journey. I love how “Want To Want You” has moments of vulnerability alongside moments of big energy and force... which I guess also describes where I'm at at the moment [haha]!

What challenges have you faced as a singer-songwriter, and how have you overcome them?

There are a lot of challenges all the time, as with anything. It's not just about being a singer-songwriter anymore, although of course that's still the foundation, but it's about building a character, on and offline, and really shaping that character into something worthy of being noticed and listened to... You need a lot of self confidence, and that's something I'm working on hard everyday.

Is there a specific song that holds a particularly special meaning to you? Can you share the story behind it?

'Blackbird' by The Beatles was the first song that came to mind. My dad used to play/sing it to me before bed when I was a kid so it'll always remind me of him. I got a tattoo of a blackbird on my arm last year in his honour!
