Matt Warren On the Making Of “It All Made Sense”

What was the creative process like for this particular "It All Made Sense?"

The single was meant to be very minimal and as such features 2 guitars, a kick drum, a tambourine, and vocals. I wanted this particular track to be very organic and simple. The music for the album as a whole was inspired by Kurt Vile's latest release (Watch my Moves) and the way he takes simple motifs and sometimes builds them into huge soundscapes, while at other times leaving them as they are and making the song almost meditational.

Can you talk about the recording and production process for "It All Made Sense?"

The single (and forthcoming album) was written and produced at my home studio within a 3 week period.

What do you like the best about this track?

I actually like my vocals... for once! I used a different register and sang very quietly and very close to the mic. I'd not worked like this before and I was pretty happy with the result.

Where do you find inspiration for your songs or musical ideas?

Inspiration comes from the slightest thing. Sometimes a phrase in the movie or a line from a book, or, at other times from just jamming. Lately, I've found stream-of-conscious writing to be really helpful for coming up with interesting phrases that I then develop.

Are there any upcoming projects or releases that you're particularly excited about?

Well, I have the new album coming out on November 1st. It's called 'Excited to Die' and is my 3rd solo full-length release. It's also a concept album, which is something I never thought I'd do. But, it happened so let’s see how it’s received.
