Eric Dwight On the Making Of “I Guess I Was Lost”

What was the creative process like for this particular "I Guess I Was Lost?"

This song was cowritten with my life-long friend Eric Callaghan who also sings it as a duet with me. The initial melody and title were mine, but I became stuck so passed off what I had to Eric. He molded his own melody and we put the two together. He added the entire chorus and I topped it off with the bridge chords and organ melodies; it ultimately was a true collaboration.

Were there any memorable or standout moments during the recording sessions for this track?

Eric and I had my house to ourselves to record - no wives or kids to distract us (they were all away at various places). We worked feverishly to complete Eric's vocals before he had to head home to Pennsylvania (he was visiting me in Boston). Time was NOT on our side but we made it happen.

What did you enjoy most about making "I Guess I Was Lost?"

Working together with my friend was a great joy. Our lives are very different and we don't have much time together, so this was special in that we made something creative together again.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how you got started in music?

I was active in music around Boston way back in the 200s, but "retired" when I had kids. they are all off to college now so empty nest syndrome has provided a new - and well-earned - opportunity. Not exactly a rock star story, but a real human one. I am a better songwriter now than when I was in my 20s for some reason.

Can you share a valuable lesson or piece of advice that you have learned along your musical journey?

No transcendent advice - just expect to get ripped off and fight like hell for every bit of attention and money you earn. It's still brutal just like my first go-around. lol
