Anna Wolf Releases “Free”
Anna Wolf, the unforgettable and multi-faceted London-based artist, is set to invite her listeners into her personal lyric diary once again with her latest single, FREE. Once described as the love child of Sia and Johnny Cash Anna creates an alternative soundscape that lingers long after the last note fades.
Born and raised in Pretoria, South Africa, Anna began her musical journey at just five years old, signing her first record deal at the age of 14. Growing up in a tumultuous household, Anna found solace and meaning through songwriting. Music became her refuge an outlet, serving as a tool for healing from the domestic abuse she both witnessed and experienced.
Her career boasts an impressive array of collaborations with music legends like Sir Johnny Clegg, Trey Call (Cash Cabin Studios), Jamie Morrison (Stereophonics), Pete Boxta Marten (Melanie C, Missy Elliott), Alex Thomas (Air, Anna Calvi), Mat-Katz Bohen (Blondie), Zak Loy (Live), Rex Roulette (Eagles of Death Metal), and DJ Jenga.
With FREE, Anna once again showcases her powerful storytelling abilities. Describing the song, she says, "FREE speaks of finding yourself caught between old patterns and the new possibilities of finding love. It's about being stuck in relationships that don’t serve you, staying because it feels familiar and ’romantically abusive.' I spent years in those kinds of relationships. No one could have talked me out of them. I had to learn to let go for myself. The moment I did, I experienced a deep sense of liberation and self-love. It was incredibly freeing to accept myself fully, flaws and all.
”Anna continues, "Flaws are necessary. They create the contrast we need to see the black and white in life, helping us find balance and make decisions from a place of love rather than fear. I hope this song speaks to others in the way it healed me.”
The music video for FREE, directed by Anna herself, is a visually arresting portrayal of the themes she explores in the song. Filmed in her bedroom alongside her dear friend and Director of Photography, Paul Fuller, the video features a striking red backdrop, symbolizing passion, energy, and fire, reflecting the intensity of relationships built on passion rather than true love.
The video shows snippets of playful cartoons that depict the chase, entrapment, and unraveling of a toxic love affair. As the video progresses, viewers witness Anna playing her electric guitar as if it's bleeding black blood all symbolizing the parts of oneself that are lost when you don’t have the courage to move forward into something new.
Anna’s raw and intimate storytelling, both sonically and visually, ensures that FREE will leave an indelible mark on its audience, resonating with those who have struggled with toxic relationships and personal growth.
