Tzucasa On the Making Of “Robots Bore Me”
How did you come up with the idea?
I was getting tired of all the talk about AI, and the capabilities of technology - I don't hate AI development in itself, but there's definitely going to be a lot of misuse and there's also a lot of mysticism about what it can and can't do. We're already seeing the negative effects of the smartphone app-ification of everything on human relationships, and I wanted to write a song based on that. To combat the myths you have to be straight to the point so I decided to write a simple rock tune that really drills it all in without question.
How did you work with the producer or engineers to bring your vision for "Robots Bore Me" to life?
Rookes was amazing working on this with me, she got the punk vibe straight away and settled it in a comfortable balance between punk inspired and contemporary. Lots of screaming and scratching guitars - at one point she even suggested going into the room and just bashing stuff to make noise. It was really fun!
How do you feel this song represents your artistic identity?
I think art exists to reflect exactly how people are feeling at that moment, and provide a space for people to be honest. This song is quite open about what it means within all the confusion of the topic, and that's important to me. At the same time, genre-wise, it reflects my love for some good old rock guitar music.
Can you tell us more about you as an artist?
My name is Tzucasa, Tokyo-born, London-bred - I like to say bred since I think I've truly been shaped into who I am in the multicultural soup of London, and "raised" is a weird word that doesn't sit right with me. I'm a multidisciplinary artist - I speak in art of all mediums from painting to songwriting. Frankly I think artist bios are redundant - I could be speaking about contemporary nationalism through a video piece one day and speaking about extraterrestrial romance through a song the other, so I hope to keep pushing it out until some people get to know me.
Are there any specific themes or messages that you aim to convey through your music?
I want my music to be positive without being vague and empty. Sometimes that involves being angry and confused, but I don't ever want my music to end there - I want it to conclude on a high, hopeful note despite all those emotions.
