The Bare Minimum On The Making Of ‘UNCAGED’
Can you share any interesting or unique musical elements or production techniques used in 'UNCAGED?’
During the COVID lockdowns I was experiencing writer's block and watching a lot of Nicolas Cage movies. So as an exercise, I wrote a song about each movie I watched. I never intended to play or record them, but after transitioning from a punk to meme-core it just made sense to put them out.
Could you discuss the lyrical themes or messages conveyed in 'UNCAGED?'
Nicolas Cage’s “Nouveau Shamanism” acting method, where he takes the physical expressiveness of the silent era of film and applies it in a modern context, was a big inspiration. I wanted to take the stories from Nicolas Cage’s movies and exaggerate them to the point of absurdity and escape the trappings of literalism. I wanted people listening to this EP to be unsure if we are cool or cringe, in the same way people who watch Nicolas Cage movies are.
What is your personal favorite song from the 'UNCAGED' and why?
My favorite song is “Drive Angry”, a song about the Nicolas Cage movie where he escapes from hell to get revenge. Musically it’s heavily inspired by Motörhead and Danzig, which I think fits that movie really well. It's only available on the physical cassette version of ‘UNCAGED’, so it sounds extra crispy.
What do you enjoy most about performing live and connecting with your audience?
Someone I look up to once said that a punk show is 50% band and 50% audience. The collaboration between everybody transforms an otherwise mundane evening into a memorable experience. That’s what I like about playing and going to shows.
Where do you find inspiration for your songs or musical ideas?
On this EP Nicolas Cage, but the next one is gonna be about food I like.
