Junk Parlor On the Making of “Hungry for Love”
Can you tell us about the inspiration behind "Hungry for Love" and the story it tells?
Hungry for Love is the mood of soul-searching debauchery that comes with wandering late at night from bar to bar. It's the contrast between urban neon lights against a clear and dark starry sky. The inspiration for this is literally wandering the streets late at night in San Francisco. Sometimes on a bike, sometimes on a skateboard, and sometimes with a friend.
Were there any memorable or standout moments during the recording sessions for "Hungry for Love?"
The overall outer space feels we got from it was a standout to all of us.. we just love it.
How do you feel "Hungry for Love" represents your artistic identity?
I am not sure what our artistic identity is... that isn't something we have ever talked about as a band. When I hear this track I can taste the night air.. so I think we achieved what we collectively tried to do with this song. I guess that's a good representation of our identity.
How did your band members initially come together?
Robin the drummer approached me (Jason) at a weekly acoustic gig I had in Petaluma. He wanted to put a group together... I told him it would be original music if I was going to be involved. That was 10 years ago. Laela fell into our fold 7 years ago and JD maybe 5 years ago. Our group is a wild and beautiful bunch.. our live shows are the absolute best.
Can you share a memorable experience from a collaboration that enriched your music?
There are many memorable experiences from collaborating that we have experienced... we all bring a sound.. an approach to a song. I remember when I asked Laela to write a string part for a song from our last album called Beneath Your Love. She came down to the studio and recorded multiple violin and viola parts and it was just absolutely beautiful. Still one of my favorite moments. On our upcoming album All Magic, No Logic, a lot came from Xifer Fortier and Meric Long who engineered the album and really held strong to our aesthetic. Xifer particularly had a way of really pushing our vision into other realms. It shows throughout the entire album. I do believe this is some of the best work we have ever done as a group. We are all very excited about it. "
