Charles East On the Making Of “Dead Beat Dance”

Can you share any interesting or unique stories or perspectives in "Dead Beat Dance?"

This song was recorded for a compilation album (inspired by the film The Return of the Living Dead) that was released in June exclusively through Bandcamp with all proceeds going to an LGBTQ+ charity and I have since released it into the world as a single on my own.

Were there any challenges or breakthrough moments during the songwriting process for "Dead Beat Dance?"

This song is a cover of "Dead Beat Dance" by The Damned recorded for the soundtrack of The Return of the Living Dead released in 1985. The soundtrack (and film) has gained quite a cult following, so it was really lovely to record it from my own perspective and sonic understanding.

Have you noticed any particular interpretations or connections that listeners have made with "Dead Beat Dance?"

People have mentioned that it is quite different and more eerie than the original.

Where do you find inspiration for your songs or musical ideas?

I think when you're a songwriter you have an innate need to keep your ear to the ground and to create the worlds and atmosphere that you resonate with most - you find your space and you work within it to build, destroy, understand, scream, retaliate... whatever is needed.

Are there any upcoming projects or releases that you're particularly excited about?

I'm busy recording a full-length album which will be released next year, probably. More details will follow as the album starts nearing its completion.
