The Disruptors On the Making Of “King of the Push Away”

What was the creative process like for this particular music video and song?

I describe the creative process for the music video below. In terms of the development of the song itself, it usually happens organically for me. I often develop the concept and lyrics first, then follow with the melody and chords, composing primarily on guitar. As with all songs on ‘The Virus Sessions’ album, I worked closely with producer/engineer Brad Young at BKY Studio, who helped with composition.

How did you work with the producer or engineers to bring your vision for "King of the Push Away" to life?

“The King of the Push-Away” mv was directed and animated by the talented Paul Motisi, Art Director at 19th & 7th. Motisi came up with the animated video concept. That said, he was great about soliciting my input along the way, sending me renderings, and meeting with me to get feedback. Motisi dedicated a bunch of time and many iterations to get the video in final form and I think he knocked it out of the park, particularly how it captures the theme of isolation as a result of rejected connections. I also love the way it tells a full story spanning many years in just three-and-a-half minutes!

What impact do you hope "King of the Push Away" will have on your audience?

I think the song and video capture well the alone-ness that can result from consistently disregarding those who try to get close to you. Personally, it’s taken me years to learn to be more present for – and appreciative of – the important people in my life. At the end of the video, there is surprised recognition not only of one another but of the passage of time, the many lost and lonely years caused by each of their lack of appreciation of people who have tried to get close to them. Perhaps there's a lesson for us all in there somewhere...

Can you tell us more about you as a band?

The Disruptors is a Boston, MA (USA) based studio band I launched in 2019. I write all the songs and invite other artists to collaborate on the recordings. Our music is varied but generally falls into the Alt Rock and Indie Pop genres. We released our debut album, ‘The Virus Sessions,’ in 2022. All tracks on that album were recorded at BKY Studio (Needham, MA) and produced and engineered by Brad Young, who also played the guitar. Since then, we've been busy writing and recording new tracks and hope to release our second album in early 2026 - and possibly an EP later this year.

Where do you find inspiration for your songs or musical ideas?

Everywhere! Some songs like “Shoulda Woulda Coulda,” “Restless Wind” and “Backsliding” are inspired by - and a reaction to - current events, particularly in the U.S., which is rapidly entering a dark phase in our history. Others like “Boy Inside the Man,” “King of the Push-Away,” “Give It To Me Straight” and “Molt” are more personal as I work through my own challenges and grapple with regrets and shortcomings. Getting these out there through songwriting I think has helped me set a course for my own future and more clearly envision ways I can improve as a human being.
