Shasau On the Making Of ‘Futuristan’

What was the initial spark or idea that led to the creation of 'Futuristan?'

I became interested in the possibilities that artificial intelligence could get me, to create something new. First, I wanted to find out what its limits of its imagination and technical skills were. It was basically an experiment, and I was driven by pure curiosity. In the process, I realized that I could use AI to create new rhythms and harmonies for myself.

How do you see this album fitting into the current musical landscape?

I believe, it fits quite well. There is nothing groundbreaking in this record, it's more of a collection of vibes and music styles that I feel comfortable being within.

Which track(s) do you like the best and why?

"1996" turned out to be a romantic-nostalgic track, and I gravitate towards such moods. "Joy Ride" is kind of a soundtrack to a road trip somewhere on the West Coast. "Here Goes Nothing" references the early work of Ulrich Schnauss. There is enough romance and purposeful movement towards some hidden goal.

How do you stay inspired and motivated to continue pushing boundaries in your art?

I don't set myself up specifically to achieve any results, it's just a process that feels good to me. People listen to music not to achieve some goal, but for pleasure, and I write music for my own pleasure as well.

Are there any particular skills or techniques that you have been working on lately?

Specifically, right now I'm working on the skill of how not to drink too much whiskey while working on music.
