Nico Davis On the Making Of “Cherry”

What inspired you to write the lyrics/music for "Cherry?"

I started writing this song back in February during the sessions for my debut EP, ‘head in the clouds.’ I'd had this piano progression and melody for the hook that I kept coming back to, and a few months later I had the lyrics. The song basically wrote itself! I wanted to make something catchy that had a fun vibe.

Can you talk about the recording and production process for "Cherry?"

I made the beat myself, with a couple Omnisphere presets I messed around with. I am especially happy with how the drums turned out, they're simultaneously very spacey and punchy at the same time. I had my friend Chris play guitar as well as my friend Selena doing the backing vocals and the song came together very well.

What has been one of your most favorite memories along the path to making this single?

My favorite memory of this single was one night at my friend's house after I'd just finished recording their band. With all the gear downstairs in the basement, while we were watching TV out of the blue I just decided to record the vocals in one take in their basement. It was cold as all anything and I had to adjust the noise gate pretty substantially but it was a lot of fun. When a song is right it comes together pretty naturally and I'm very happy with this song.

Can you tell us more about you as an artist?

I'm an artist and producer based out of South Jersey. My styles are primarily alternative R&B and indie pop, but I have a wide array of influences. I play a variety of instruments but my main axe is the keyboard. I started putting out solo music this year as a way to promote my production but I realized I had so much more fun making music as a solo artist.

Are there any upcoming projects or releases that you're particularly excited about?

Currently wrapping up my next single Margarita which should be out at the end of July, and I'm in the process of recording a collaborative hip hop EP with fellow New Jersey artists Yung Dread da Prophet and Maticilous Matt. I'm doing all of the beats on that project aside from one. Finishing a music video for “Cherry” as well.
