MINA On the Making OF “Broken Boy (Brando Walker Remix)”

How did everything come together?

I started writing the original version of “Broken Boy” in early 2023 about an experience I’d just had. I approached it with my usual Soul/RnB vibe and went to record it all with producer Brando Walker in London. He arranged and produced the track with me leading the direction.

I have been influenced by more and more electronic and dance music over the past couple years, I started playing with the idea of getting a remix done. After looking for a producer who’d be interested, I asked Brando as he knew the track already and I love all his original music which has so many influences. He agreed and “Broken Boy” (Brando Walker Remix) was born.

Can you share any interesting or unique musical elements or production techniques used in this single?

The remix was entirely done by Brando Walker. But I love the insane contrast in style between the original which I will release on the 22nd of November and the remix which he made into a complete banger.

What impact do you hope "Broken Boy (Brando Walker Remix)" will have on your audience?

Primarily I hope they enjoy the track and that they can take something personal away from it. Especially if they have been in a similar situation where a person they love can’t reciprocate due to their own traumas, which I believe many people have. At least from speaking to people and the countless online content talking about personality types and so on. It’s a massive learning process when we reflect on the connections we build with people.

How do you balance incorporating new trends while maintaining a unique and timeless production style?

When it comes to the production style I tend to work with producers that I completely trust. I believe their style of producing will add to the song and take it to the next level. It is all about collaboration and respecting each other’s strengths. I am not too focused on new trends. I love to go through plug-ins and samples with producers and see what inspires us and what we believe is right for the song and go from there.

Do you have a favorite song that you've performed or recorded? What makes it special to you?

My favorite song at the moment is “Broken Boy.” The original will showcase a more chilled soul vibe but I love how melodic it is. This is a very special song to me because it’s the first time that I am actively healing through a personal experience and releasing a song in real time during that time.
