Magenta Moon On the Making Of “Red Again”

Can you tell us about the inspiration behind "Red Again" and the story it tells?

We were initially inspired to write a song about the shifting political climate. Every once in a while, there is a turn towards radicalism on all sides. We wanted to write a song demonstrating the shift an individual feels from apathy to action when this crimson wave comes. We wrote the verses and choruses to sound very different from each other. We chose to go from half to double time and from minor to major to show this shift from a more chill rock vibe into punk aggression. It was really important to us that the lyrics move from feeling like a victim to feeling empowered to live large.

Were there any challenges or breakthrough moments during the songwriting process for this song?

Because the sections of the song changed suddenly, we felt like it might be too disjointed. We had to figure out how to iron the track out so that while communicating the disorienting process of turning apathy into action, the song also felt cohesive and pleasant to listen to. This is intrinsically punk. Not many songs try to shift moods so aggressively within the track, so it was an extra big challenge, but challenges like this really inspire us.

What did you enjoy most about making "Red Again?"

This is the first time we worked with Marc Solo of Slo Mo King Records, and we really let ourselves write the song loosely over time. We put our frustrations and raw emotions into the song as they came up. This felt really freeing. We feel this song is an honest expression of how we were living as we were working on it.

What is your creative vision as a duo?

Magenta Moon is a party. Whether you’re alone in the car listening, or coming out to a show and meeting all the beautiful people. We want to take the party to the moon.
