Love Trip On the Making Of “Wind on the Hill”

What inspired you to write the lyrics/music for "Wind on the Hill?"

"Wind on the Hill" was written during a torrential rainstorm while living in Topanga. The roads in and out of the canyon were closed due to flooding, so we hunkered down in our bungalow while a river formed in our yard (the first lyric of the second verse). The song was later finished after we left Topanga and moved into our van full time.

Can you talk about the recording and production process for "Wind on the Hill?"

This is the first song we recorded and produced in the van while travelling through Arizona. Recording powered by solar creates limitations that are both challenging and simplifying. We need to be somewhere sunny during the day to charge the battery. We need to record at night because it's too hot during the day with all the doors closed. There are fewer distractions, and our energy can be poured into our art more smoothly.

How do you feel this song represents your artistic identity?

Part of our artistic identity is noticing the Earth, and allowing its messages to come through in song. "Wind on the Hill" carries this spirit.

This song also expresses a whimsical, playful side of our personalities. creating this one felt less serious than our previous release - we had a lot of fun making it and we'd like to continue imbuing the spirit of play into our music.

What inspired you to pursue a career in music?

Music is our north star in life. We are extremely fortunate to be able to focus our lives around doing the things that we love.

What are some of the biggest challenges you have faced as a duo, and how did you overcome them?

Resistance is a constant challenge that needs to be overcome every day. Sometimes it can present in clever and convincing ways. It took us a year to finish our first song, as Resistance spun stories of inadequacy, making us question the entire endeavour. Sitting down, feeling it, and then doing the work is the only way through.
