laughghter On the Making Of “Satan Stop the Wheel”

Can you tell us about the inspiration behind "Satan Stop the Wheel" and the story it tells?

Yes for sure. This song definitely sits in the sort of narrative-world created by the rest of 'Killing, Grief and Lies' which releases October 18th. The clue is in the title of the EP really and I think “Satan Stops the Wheel” comes at those themes from an almost biblical and Dante-esque angle as opposed to one of complete sincerity. We love the idea and imagery of W.B. Yeats's Wheel and 'A Vision' and I guess that's the backbone of this song.

The majority of the songs on the upcoming EP were written on acoustic guitar in our living rooms drunk so when it came to producing the final tracks it seemed fitting to take inspiration from bands like Red House Painters and Slowdive and contemporaries such as Nicole Dollanganger, Angelo de Augustine and Ethel Cain.

Was there any challenge that you encountered while making the track?

I think writing the lyrics for this record (and the upcoming EP as a whole) was a challenge. They needed to be vague and enigmatic enough to leave room for the imagination of the listener and be open for interpretation rather than for it to maybe to be as autobiographical as we liked. We didn't want them to walk a line of being potentially worrying or gratuitously dramatic.

What impact do you hope "Satan Stop the Wheel" will have on your audience?

It's our first release and I feel like a good teaser of what's in store on the rest of the EP.

Can you tell us more about you as a duo?

Yes. We've been friends for about 6 years and within that time both had musical projects either solo or with other musicians. We have always spoken about making music together but it wasn't until this year that we realised what it should sound like.

We started writing for this project in April and it immediately clicked; we were both on the same page creatively from the get go thematically and sonically. The process of writing this record has been really fun despite having to put ourselves into some miserable positions to posture the creative process.

David lives in Glasgow and I, Nathan, live in London and writing and recording in both cities has shaped the sound also - both cities have quite a dark genius loci which I think shines through on the EP.

Are there any upcoming projects or releases that you're particularly excited about?

We are both super excited for the full EP, 'Killing, Grief and Lies', to drop on October 18th. And we've already started writing our next release.
