Hansen On the Making Of “KOTR”

What was the creative process for this single?

Interestingly, the creative process was kickstarted when I hit rock bottom. My last release was close to a year a half ago and I found myself going through the motions. I think as a creative it’s natural to have highs and lows. Even before I put pen to paper, I knew I wanted this to be something of a statement. Fortunately for me, I have great support network around that inspires and encourages me when times are tough. I found solace in writing about my truth which can be quite daunting. I guess we're all running away from something… Towards the backend of 2024, I just locked myself away in the studio for a few weeks and “KOTR” was one of the songs that came of that.

Were they any memorable or stand out moments during the recording sessions for “KOTR?”

Not in particular. It was more of a cathartic process. Things just came together in such a short space of time. I ended up writing and recording about 10 new songs in the same week that I made “KOTR.” I have to shoutout Maya Diaz [one of the co-founders of Root 73]. His ability to understand my madness and vision when piecing this mix together is something else. Also massive shoutout to my brothers, Luke Demetri & JK. They were integral in helping me put the music video for “KOTR” together. Those guys worked tirelessly to co-ordinate and make that experience so smooth… so love to them.

Is there any particular message or theme you hope listens take away from “KOTR?”

For me… it's about perseverance and self-confidence. Life is too short to let things slide. Before you know it, you'll be sitting there with a million questions and in a consistent state of what could've been? Sometimes you've just got to shed skin and believe in yourself. If you don't then who will?

Can you tell us more about you as an artist?

I’d like to say… what you see is what you get when it comes to me as an artist but that would be lying. I think offer an element of surprise which is a good thing. I try to be aware of how I operate in this space. As a white rapper in the black genre, I'm aware that there is a fine line between appropriation and appreciation. I hope my sound reflects what my upbringing was… which is that of a kid that grew up in South East London.

Where do you find inspiration for your songs or musical ideas?

I’m inspired by a lot. Where I’m from… the relationships that I have with others whether that’s platonic, romantic or just everyday encounters. I try to make an effort to capture the small details in my writing. It's the intangibles which make our individual experiences unique.
