Feature: Sloan Treacy Decodes ‘Stuck’
What was the creative process like for this particular EP?
I wrote the songs over 2021-2022. I wrote them mostly based on things that were happening in my life, but I was also inspired by a lot of books, movies, and conversations that I would overhear. AKA eavesdropping. Writing the songs really helped me express myself and put into words the things that I was feeling. This EP is also really special to me because it is the first time I have ever released music. I am so excited that it’s out, and it’s crazy to think that people can listen to my songs!
How did you work with the producer or engineers to bring your vision for 'Stuck' to lite?
I was lucky enough to get the chance to work with two incredible producers. Don Miggs and Mike Pappas. I was so nervous my first time going into the studio, but I couldn’t have hoped for a better experience. They are both not only so talented but also very kind and patient. After discussing what my goal was for the EP and what I wanted the feel of the songs to be, I played the first song “Forever and Always” for Don here in his studio in LA, and he immediately picked up a guitar and started playing a riff. He tracked a bunch of different instruments and I recorded a rough vocal draft. The day after, I went back and we did the same for the rest. It was so fun working with Don and Mike because they really understand what I mean when I have certain opinions on the sound or feeling of a song. I went in to the LA studio a couple of times to get down the majority of the rough drafts of the songs and then went Nashville to record the rest. I had so much fun there! I love Nashville so much and think it is such a cool city. It was there that I played an acoustic version of what is now my favorite song on the EP, “Stuck” for Don. Overall It was such an amazing experience and I am so grateful for the opportunity.
Which song(s) do you like the best and why?
My favorite song on the EP is probably “Stuck.” It is definitely the biggest song production wise, but I really like that about it. I love more acoustic tracks too, and write all of my songs on my acoustic guitar, but there is something so exciting about having a lot of different instruments and movie pieces in a song. I wrote it after overhearing an argument. Something that was said really stuck with me and I wanted to do my best to convey the feeling of frustration and longing that I got from the conversation.
What inspired you to pursue a career in music?
I have always loved music. It’s been such a huge part of my life for as long as I can remember. I definitely have my parents to thank for introducing to a bunch of amazing artists. I love how many possibilities creating music offers. I have always loved lyrics. If the lyrics to a song are good I immediately like it. I love how songwriting allows you to tell a story in a way that isn’t limiting. You can tell so many different sides and change how it is told and perceived. My favorite is when lyrics make you think. In my opinion, the lyrics that are the most fun to hear and write are the ones that have a lot of layers. I have also always loved performing. There is something so freeing about being on stage. I feel like I can really be my most honest and genuine self through my music.
What do you find most rewarding about co-writing with others?
I have gotten the opportunity to co-write with some really talented artists in songwriting classes. I feel like collaborating allows you to be so much more creative. You can bounce ideas off of each other and tap into parts of yourself and your mind you may not be able to access on your own.
