Feature: Jakob The Liar Decodes “ A Song Like You”
What was the creative process like for this particular song?
I really wanted to write something completely out of my comfort zone. I’m someone who’s a fan of not repeating myself too much, and therefore always try to never write the same song twice. Thus, for this song, I was determined to write in a way and from a place I’d never allowed myself or done before. I really loved that process.
Moreover, the creative process for “A Song Like You” felt like a natural culmination of all the hard lessons the London dating scene had taught me which led me to meet the song’s heroine, my fiancé and wonderful life partner (who also happens to be a super talented actress). The song grew as our relationship did, eventually becoming the celebrative anthem you hear on the single.
Were there any challenges or breakthrough moments during the songwriting process for "A Song Like You?"
I tend to find that a lot of riffs and licks I composed as a young man resurface in new ways and outfits as I get older. A bit like how you grow as a person as you learn from mistakes and moments throughout life, the riff at the end of this song came out of something far more complex and possibly over-thought into something simple and memorable – a bit like how I’ve come to see healthy relationships and love.
What impact do you hope "A Song Like You" will have on your audience?
I’ve always wanted my music to be a reflection of how life can improve if you work hard to get there. My life wasn't always a blissful love song - it's been a journey and I know how much it takes to make it out of a bad place. “A Song Like You” is about effortless love, and the joys of experiencing it. The song might not show you the hard work and effort it took to get there, however; what it does reveal to the listener is that it’s possible.
How has your music evolved since you started as a singer-songwriter? What have been some key milestones in your artistic journey?
When I started out I wasn’t a confident composer. I tried to portray a version of myself that I thought would be accepted and recognised in the circles I thought were the right ones for me. Getting older and more confident as a song-writer and person, I’ve realised I don’t need to portray anything but who I am and the life I live, and that the circles I once deemed admirable are as full of baloney as the rest.
Are there any upcoming projects or releases that you're particularly excited about?
Yes! Our EP, ‘Wake Up Mr. Kupferberg’ upon which this single will be on will be out in a few months. It’s going to have the album versions of our three previous singles as well. We’re really excited about it, and it will be a taster of our upcoming LP, ‘The Great Awakening.’ The band can’t wait to share the songs and play them across the UK and hopefully around the world!
