Ellery Twining On the Making Of “DUSTY SPRINGFIELD'S RECORD COLLECTION”

What was the creative process like for this particular song?

I always write the lyrics for the entire record first, then I write the music Once I have achieved that, I collage the lyrics over the music that makes the most sense. For DUSTY, the laconic guitar effects worked perfectly with the narrative.

Were there any memorable or standout moments during the recording sessions for "DUSTY SPRINGFIELD'S RECORD COLLECTION?"

The vibraphone session was something I will never forget. I had seen a person on Instagram use a cello bow on a vibraphone, to great effect. So, I bought a cello bow, and wrote a part that I thought would fit on the song. When I arrived at Dirt Floor to record that day, they went all out, putting the vibes in the big room and breaking out the best microphones. When I began to sound check, the cello bow wasn’t making any noticeable sound at all. I had forgotten the string rosin.

Knowing that Eric and G Man had taken extra time to prepare the space, I decided to simply improvise on mallets. I pulled out my chord charts, found the six notes I could play in key, and told Eric to roll tape.

We only did one take. If you open yourself up to the Dirt Floor vibe, miracles happen.

What was your favorite moment in making the music video?

Issy Paterson arriving as The Ghost. But, Carly Straub slays as always.

Can you share a bit about your musical background and the journey that led you to where you are today?

As a drummer, there is an underlying strain on creativity:
“shut up and play the drums…”
I stood up for myself.

What are some of the biggest challenges you have faced as a musician, and how did you overcome them?

Building an audience, right? Finding a way to manipulate the algorithm…
