Dan Devon On the Making Of ‘Bad Mittens’

Can you share any interesting or unique musical elements or production techniques in 'Bad Mittens?'

‘Bad Mittens’ is the first album I produced strictly with analog gear, i.e., samplers, hardware synthesizers, and live instruments.

What initial spark or idea led to the creation of 'Bad Mittens?’

I wanted to create an experimental album. I want to create more experimental albums.

What are you most proud of this album?

I love how abstract, loose, and warm the record feels. It’s not all sparkly and shiny. Analog has a tepid aesthetic. All the sounds were sculpted and performed live, so the album feels like a performance more than a recording.

How do you approach understanding and translating an artist's vision into the production process?

I wanted this album to be “artsy,” so I researched painting and sculpting to incorporate some of those concepts into this work. This approach to artistic development interests me. It’s how the music evolves.

Have you ever encountered resistance or pushback when experimenting with your art?

If so, how did you handle it? As an artist, I understand my art isn’t for everyone, but thus far in my music career, no one has stopped me from creating, experimenting, and sharing my music, and I love it. It’s always great to find individuals that love my music as much as me.
