Caleb Dye On the Making Of “Lost In The Crowd”

Can you tell us about the inspiration behind "Lost In The Crowd" and the story it tells?

I wrote this song after moving to college in New York City and feeling a weird sense of loneliness during my first year in the city. I had never been around so many people before, yet I still felt alone. The song came out of this feeling, and I wanted to instill a sense of loneliness in the song through the interplay between the voice and the violin.

Were there any memorable or standout moments during the recording sessions for this song?

I recorded the vocals and guitar in a very DIY way in my parent's small walk-in closet. In order to reduce noise I had to shut off the house A/C so it definitely got hot while recording! The other instruments I recorded by working with some musicians remotely, which was a fun way to collaborate with others on this song.

What has been one of your most favorite memories along the path to making "Lost In The Crowd?"

I enjoyed producing this song a lot because I did not have a clear idea for the song when I started recording, but I enjoyed discovering what the song should sound like through trial and error. It was fun to compose a violin part as well.

Can you share a bit about your musical background and the journey that led you to where you are today?

I think my musical journey started and then quickly ended in sixth grade when I started guitar lessons at school but lost the guitar after the first lesson. I didn't start learning again until Covid when I watched tutorials and learned the basics that way. Over the past couple years, I have been taking lessons and luckily have not lost another guitar!

What role do you feel emotions play in your music, and how do you channel them into your performances?

Emotions drive a lot of the decisions I make when writing music, because the emotional feel of the song is the most important aspect for me when I go to complete a song. It decides everything from how I want the timbre of my voice to sound like and the arrangement of the instruments. I always hope that the desired emotion is translated through my performance.
