Feature: Jacre Decodes “Not Falling”

What inspired you to write the lyrics/music for "Not Falling?"

The first line of the chorus ("Every morning, I wake up with the fear of not falling for you again") just popped into my head, and that led to the rest of the song and story. This is what usually happens - I decide to write a song, and a snippet of melody quickly occurs to me with an interesting lyric. I then work out the rest of the song from there.

This one took longer to finish than usual because ironically, I slipped, fell and broke my leg literally while writing that first chorus! That put me out of action for a few months.

How did you work with the producer or engineers to bring your vision for this song to life?

I sent a piano and vocal demo to my wonderful producer, Dominic Romano. The vision for the sound of the track is entirely his, along with the mixing and mastering engineers (Charles-Henry Volk and Philip Marsden).

What impact do you hope "Not Falling" will have on your audience?

I'm really proud of this one, and I hope it will act as a gateway drug into the rest of my music! My monthly listener numbers took a massive hit when I recently had to take an 18-month break, and it would be great to see those numbers start to recover.

Can you tell us more about you as an artist?

Although I did a lot of music when I was younger, I only started releasing music in my mid-50's. It's amazing how people have connected to my music, even though I'm so much older than most of the other artists out there!

How do you balance crafting relatable stories with maintaining your unique voice as a songwriter?

I have a happy, settled life, so I usually have to fictionalise whatever story I'm writing. In the case of Not Falling, my wife and I haven't had any bumps in the road of our relationship, so I added them into the song to make it more interesting! I also genre-bend, so I move between Pop/Rock, Indie Folk and other genres depending on the song, and that makes it easier to get that balance right.
