Bupkis On the Making Of ‘Tarantella’

How did you come up with the theme?

I wanted to make fun music with a serious message, to shake off the ills and maladies of the every day. The symbol of the upside down Jolly Roger sums up that feeling.

Were there any moments in the recording process where you knew you had something special?

Fist time around, we recorded “Haystack” and that went well and i thought it could be built upon. Then we recorded lot of songs in a very short time, and the first of this batch was the last on the album, “Dominator.” While we recorded that and filled it with ridiculous noises, I knew we were going to have the feel of that recording session captured, and it was going to be unique.

Which song(s) from 'Tarantella' do you think best represents your artistic vision?

“Howitis” definitely, and probably “So Said” and “Simulacra” as well.

What is your creative vision as an artist?

I want to live in the footsteps of the great musicians I've been obsessing over for all of my life, and try to create some new things!

How did your musical journey begin, and what were some of the initial challenges you faced?

I started playing trumpet when I was 8, and was quite bad at it, then I saw some kids playing guitar when I was 12 and wanted to be like them. It didn't come naturally but I kept at it relentlessly, and that continues to this day. For years I released electronic music online, played bass bands, or did quite unserious parody music. Eventually, I felt ready to get the music I had been writing since I was fifteen recorded, sixteen years later.

Throughout the years I've been inspired in rough order by Earth, Wind and Fire, Yes, Led Zeppelin, Outkast, The Mountain Goats, Kate Bush, Pixies and MF DOOM.
