Anti Groupies On the Making Of “Read the Room”
What was the creative process like for this particular "Read the Room?"
“Read the Room” was the first song we ever wrote together as a band. It was definitely a learning curve learning how to write with each other for the first time, but we knew exactly what we wanted our message for our band to be. Unapologetically ourselves.
Is there a particular message or theme you hope listeners take away from "Read the Room?"
The song's main message is not to let anyone make you feel like you don’t deserve what you want. It’s your life and if someone has an issue with how you live it, then they don’t deserve to be a part of it in the first place. “Reading the Room” is a big metaphor for taking a fucking hint.
What did you enjoy most about making "Read the Room?"
“Read the Room” was such a fun song to write and perform because any bottled-up emotion you have you get to let it all out. No matter what anyone is going through in the room when we play it, we hope they get to scream and dance to it and realize that we are all in this together. It was also a super proud moment writing our first song we actually enjoyed and looked forward to performing.
How do you engage with your audience during your live performances to create a memorable experience for them?
At this point in our career, we can make friends with everyone who enjoys our music and attend our shows. As we hopefully get on a bigger scale I think it’s important to get people singing along and dancing, as much as they feed off our energy, we feed off theirs. If they are having a good time, so are we.
Where do you find inspiration for your songs or musical ideas?
Most, if not all, of our inspiration comes from life experience. Music is a big therapy outlet for all of us, and not just in the lyrics. The key of the song, the guitar and bass lines, what drum beat we choose, it all has a feeling. Most of our songs are calling people out who have done us wrong or belittled us. As well as telling people off in these songs, is a lot of self-reassurance that we can do anything we put our minds to.
