Christopher Nolan Explains What Really Happened In Inception’s Ending

In 2013, Christopher Nolan’s science fiction blockbuster Inception was first released to theaters. The film that stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Cobb is considered one of the greatest film ever made in the genre. However, even after 13 years, the ending is still a wildly discussed subject.

Is Cobb still dreaming? Is he trapped in limbo? Is the happy ending a reality?

For years, viewers can’t seem to agree on an answer. It makes sense. A happy ending comes so sudden seems surreal. Cobb tosses his spinning top, but he no longer cares if it keeps spinning or not. Here’s what the director says about the ambiguous ending and what it truly means.

"I mean, the end of Inception, it is exactly that. There is a nihilistic view of that ending, right? But also, he has moved on and is with his kids. The ambiguity is not an emotional ambiguity. It's an intellectual one for the audience," Nolan explained in an interview.

He also teased that his latest thriller Oppenheimer has an intricate connection with the ending of Inception. “It is funny, I think there is an interesting relationship between the endings of Inception and Oppenheimer to be explored. Oppenheimer has got a complicated ending. Complicated feelings,” stated Nolan. However, to learn what truly happens at the end of Oppenheimer, viewers have to go discover themselves. At this time, the director refrained from revealing too much.

Oppenheimer will hit the theatres on July 21.
