UNITY On the Making Of “SOMEWHERE IN TIME”
What was the initial spark or idea that led to the creation of "SOMEWHERE IN TIME?"
My goal was to experiment with the sound, combine the sonic elements that aren’t often heard together Overall I wanted to just play with the sound, shape my style as a producer, and discover my unique approach to creating music as an artist. I intended to translate the feeling of the omnipresence of the human consciousness everywhere at once, as well as the mystery and harshness of space where the protagonist experiences this state.
Can you share any interesting or unique musical elements or production techniques used in "SOMEWHERE IN TIME?"
Sure! The fundamental for this song is definitely its ground-shaking bass mixed with syncopated trap drum patterns and hand drums. The other thing that I heavily focused on was creating complex FX elements that would compliment the drum and the bass and make it more unique as a result. The instrumentation however is way simpler. You never want to oversaturate your track with complexity. I used a bunch of sweeping synths and a chopped sample of a gospel singer. I played with the voice effects too: complex delay and distortion modulation mixed with celestial vocals seem to be working great together!
What did you enjoy most about making this track?
It was really like solving a problem or a puzzle. Unconventional music requires an unconventional approach so you can’t really follow the rules of a generic pop/electronic composition. You have neither templates nor guidelines, and you end up creating your own. That seemed scary at first but I feel like working in a team drastically helped me to embrace the difficulties and keep trying different things until we were happy with the result. Creating this song was a genuine exploration of who I am and what I’m capable of as a musician. One of the greatest experiences in my life!
How do you approach the process of creating a new song or melody?
Because I listen to many genres of music I have many paths to choose from while creating a track. Knowing the elements of diverse genres lets me brainstorm on how they would sound together. I just keep mixing them, twisting, modulating, erasing, and doing it over and over again until I find the combination that genuinely hits me. And in this moment I know this is the sound I was digging for.
Are there any unconventional techniques you've experimented with that led to interesting results?
In the first verse, I aimed to create a drastic dynamic change from line to line and I ended up mixing a calm, trance hand drum pattern with harsh metal snares, blasting 808’s, and glitching sound effects. It’s hard to envision this by just reading about it so I invite you to set off to this sonic journey and experience this it yourself. SOMEWHERE IN TIME is available on all streaming platforms, as well as a retro-futuristic music video!
