Semler “Stages of a Breakdown”

Stages of a Breakdown is a record that should be digested from the beginning to the end. Like sonic series, capturing different stages from the departure of Semler’s longest-standing friendship, the album invites listeners to a fully immersed, sensuous journey. The story behind the album though is heartbreaking — two friends who have known each other forever devolved into a total collapse because of anti-queer religious sentiment.

Heartbreak, anger, introspection, honesty, and letting go are the themes of Stages of a Breakdown. There’s no doubt that Semler is a powerful songwriter. Their ability to navigate between mood-filled dance parties, dramatic storylines, cathartic releases, and a refreshing new beginning is a highlight of this record.

“You’re Not My Friend” evokes a sense of angsty honesty and emo aesthetic in their lyrics, as if being ripped off of their chest, it’s raw and direct. The sonic component takes on a different route, filling the room with an intoxicating dance atmosphere where you can safely process and confront these emotions that seem to rip your heart apart.

“Don’t Tell Anyone” and “Twenties” find themselves in conversation with one another. “Don’t Tell Anyone” tells the relationship from the perspective of Semler’s ex-friend while “Twenties” breaks free from the past energy in response to the judgment and loss of love. “Rise Up” and “Outro” slow down into heartfelt contemplation, finding peace and moving on.
