Wayne Wei On the Making Of ‘Cloud Chaser’

Can you tell us about the inspiration behind 'Cloud Chaser' and the story it tells?

This EP explores a conceptual approach to relationships and emotions, portraying the chaotic yet beautiful aspects of human connections. Ironically I actually wrote this song about quitting smoking cigarettes originally. It is essentially a toxic relationship between me and smoking. It sort of perfectly described my toxic relationships in the past and I just rolled with the same feeling to create this EP.

Can you talk about the recording and production process for 'Cloud Chaser?'

The instruments on this EP are mainly recorded by me at home and in studios. The drum recordings, however, are recorded with 3 different drummers myself included. Working with different drummers brought various elements to the record for sure.

What is your personal favorite song from 'Cloud Chaser' and why?

I think my favorite song would be “Out of Control.” It was the first song on the album that I started working on and it took the longest to finish. It came together super naturally for this song, because I took my time over a year long to brew it.

How did you get started in music, and what inspired you to become a singer-songwriter?

I studied classical piano until the age of 14 and started learning writing and jazz music in high school. I started picking up bass and guitar during my time at Berklee College of Music. Once I got to college, that is when I started exploring various genres. I think Frank Ocean inspired me the most to become a singer-songwriter. He inspired me to stay true to myself as an artist despite of what others may think.

Can you walk us through your creative process when writing and composing music?

I usually start writing a song with any acoustic instruments like piano or guitar. For this EP though, it was mainly a drum groove first that inspired me to make backing tracks before writing.
