Vincent Moss On the Making Of “Jump the Gun”

Can you tell us about the inspiration behind "Jump the Gun" and the story it tells?

The war and mass suffering in Gaza in the last 6 months were the main inspiration. Though I'm against war in general I felt I could not stay silent total destruction of the infrastructure and means of living of 2.5 million people.

Were there any challenges or breakthrough moments during the songwriting process for "Jump the Gun?"

The original title was Stop the Bombs. I didn't feel it was good enough and got the inspiration for “Jump the Gun” while imagining a crowd at a rock or maybe punk concert jumping in protest.

Also I've never written rap. The verses were meant to be sung along the lines of the guitar melody. But I had too many ideas to express and singing didn't have the edge I wanted the song to have. So I got the idea to rap the part instead and keep the guitar as counter melody.

Can you talk about any collaborations you had while making this single?

My recent tracks and this one have been mixed and finished by Rudiger Vocals. He's a young and talented musician based in California. I like his overall vision and how he puts the different parts together. In this case, he also played the final bass track himself.

Can you share a bit about your musical background and the journey that led you to where you are today?

I have a classical music upbringing but rotated first to dark wave (Depeche Mode etc) and put out a self-made CD when that was still a thing. Since then I've moved more into rock, exploring different styles as I like the full breadth it offers and don't want to limit myself to one sub-genre yet.

How do you balance crafting relatable stories with maintaining your unique voice as a songwriter?

I don't give that so much consideration. I usually start with a guitar or piano riff and then add a top of line melody and lyrics. Sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn't. Hopefully it ends up being relatable. “Jump the Gun” is my first song I wrote going into it with a purpose. Time will tell if it strikes a chord with people.
