The Sex Guys On the Making Of “Tin Foil Hat”

How did you come up with the idea?

We were throwing around a bunch of song ideas for something with a catchy chorus and conspiracy theories were on the list. After thinking about people in our own lives that get a bit "tin foil hatty", we found that we could add a bit of humour to the verses to tell a story that everyone has experienced in one way or another, while keeping it high energy with a fun chorus.

Were there any memorable or standout moments during the recording sessions for "Tin Foil Hat?"

We were all so locked in for the 2 days it felt like a blur, the thing I remember most was turning up, day one to the studio, and the address was in the middle of suburbia, like, streets of white picket fences and rendered walls. It was this lovely old ladies house, so a band of sweaty dudes lugged all this gear down the side of her house, I thought we were about to do a bedroom recording. Turns out just around the back of the house there’s a shipping container with most of S.A.E packed into it, set up with a full live room and control room, you know the ones with the faders that move by themselves and shit? It was sick.

How does "Tin Foil Hat" fit into your overall artistic vision and what can listeners expect from you in the future?

We try to keep our music and our lives performances high energy and light hearted. “Tin foil hat” sits perfectly in our catalogue. As far as future, not allowed to tell you yet.

As far as the near future, we have our debut ep "HEAR CUM: THE SEX GUYS" on its way for 2025.

Can you tell us more about you as a band?

We are a 3-piece punk rock band from the Gold Coast, Australia. We have all been friends since high school but chased down different musical projects, in 2023 we decided to start a band where we don’t need click tracks and we could play any stage no matter how high or low quality. And we had a lot of fun playing all of those stages, we played everything from half pipes to festival main stages and it’s been fun as piss.

Can you share a standout moment from one of your live performances that you'll never forget?

I don’t know if I’d call it a standout performance.

But one show at Greaser Bar in Brisbane, ok so we used to have this other guitarist named Jamie, and he’s the best guitarist going around, smooth like butter, super handsome, all that. Anyway he moved to Canada so Dennis had to play all the lead guitar. Jamie was back in the country and was around to come see us play, Dennis played the worst guitar solo ever in a song, horrible, off key, the works. Played the whole staring and Jamie mouthing the words "this is your fault."
