The Planet Hour On the Making Of “Gutpunch!”
What was the creative process like for this particular song?
This song was one of the early tracks written on the electric guitar, usually I (Jamie) will come to the band with a new song that I have written on the acoustic and we will flesh it out together.
I am the primary songwriter for the band and a lot of the lyrics come from my own personal experiences.
Were there any challenges or breakthrough moments during the songwriting process for "Gutpunch!?"
During the recording process, we found that the song naturally gradually speeds up towards the end. We tried several takes with a click track and couldn't get it to sound the way we wanted, so ended up recording the track sans-click.
What impact do you hope "Gutpunch!" will have on your audience?
Hopefully, this track will help us reach a wider audience as we expand on our indie-folk roots.
We began life as an acoustic band but the songs were always "loud" - this is just a natural extension of that sound.
How did your band members initially come together?
I (Jamie) had recorded most of what would become our debut EP - ‘Say Nothing.’ It was being recorded for my own singer-songwriter project that I had been pursuing - gigging around the local Aberdeen area and gaining a small following.
For the EP launch, I wanted to give the EP the full band treatment and managed to bring in the help of Robert on bass and Emma on drums. After the EP launch, which was a sold-out success, we decided to continue forward as The Planet Hour.
Are there any upcoming projects or releases that you are particularly excited about?
When we were in the studio for “Gutpunch!” we also recorded another track which will be coming very soon - “Nothing More to Say.” It is another track that shows that we can be loud when we want to be!
Besides that, we are really focussing on working on our debut album. It is in the planning phase right now and we will be working on it in the new year.
