SINGLE REVIEW: TIRED COSSACK “PEA ROLL ALONG”
Inspired by an old Ukrainian tale about a pea who turned into a boy that helped save the children of two old farmers, “Pea Roll Along” is glazing in the mystical folkloric charm of a fuzzy post-punk soundscape. Tried Cossack’s witty lyricism has a childlike re-imagination of the original story that taps into a unique, whimsical universe with bouncy, groovy bassline and layers of electrified, industrialized obscurity brewing in the air.
“Pea Roll Along” has a gritty texture that is identical to the Tired Cossack sound in combination with his humorous, laid-back vibe. Taking influences from post-punk and 80s pop artists, yet connected to his Ukrainian heritage and Winnipeg roots which produces his charming folkloric storytelling, Tired Cossack is astonishingly fascinating.
Described by the artist, Stephen Halas, Tired Cossack, in his words, is a “sleepy, jittering, celebration of life’s anxious desire and the comfort in loneliness and longing nostalgia. He’s also cute and gentle despite his size and bushy beard.”
Transitioning towards the fade-out in the end, a verse dipped in Ukrainian pushes its charm to the highest. It’s simply something no one should miss, and once you heard it, you can’t stop revisiting it over and over again.
