In our interview below, we chat with Price from Roxercat about their upcoming project, their influences and creative process.

Punk Head: I absolutely love the energy of ‘Crime.’ What's the creative process like?

Price: My songwriting process is like tuning into a cosmic radio... I pretty much hear lyrics & music at the same time. It’s more a matter of taking the time to write it down or get a quick recording of what I’m hearing before it’s gone. Crime was written a few years back. I’d just gotten home from the Nashville NAMM Show and this song was rolling around in my head. That’s always inspiring for musicians, seeing all the amazing gear and instruments you’d love to own LOL! ‘Crime’ only had a verse & chorus for the longest time because I was busy with the rock musical and pretty much forgot about it until we started Roxercat and were picking out tunes to play. The night before our tracking date I sat down & wrote the other 2 verses. Once I have the song in my head, the lyrics are always there I just have to take time to listen.

PH: What was your favorite moment in making the music video?

Price: My favorite moment was wearing that catsuit. It’s actually extremely comfortable. I didn’t want to take it off when we were finished. My son Desmond, who’s a saxophone performance major in college, was behind the camera when we were filming the ‘planet’ clips. I was making him laugh most of the time. The outtakes are pretty hilarious. That night was definitely the most fun. The other half of the filming was done on a different night in sub degree weather outside in a construction zone. We’d do a take or two and then have to run inside to get warm. Not as much fun, HA!

PH: Can you tell us a little about your upcoming album?

Price: The EP is already OUT! It released on Jan 13th! Stan Lassiter & Bill Francis and I had been working for 3 years on a project together, The Fortunate Few : the rock opera. We were getting really close to gearing up for the live show but then the pandemic brought it to a grinding halt. By the time live music opened up again, half of our cast had moved away so the project completely stalled (although we did release the record). Anyway, we had developed this incredible chemistry during those 3 years and wanted to continue on our sonic journey together so we started the band Roxercat.

We rehearsed for about 3 months with drummer Andy Peake, an amazing Nashville drummer. From there we went in and cut the EP at Sound Emporium Studios with Clarke Schleicher behind the board as audio engineer & co-producer. Clarke brought in the incredible Jeff Roach to play hammond on 3 of the tunes. I was singing all the background vocal parts for the songs and after about 4, Clarke suggested we get some other voices in there so we also have Rebekah Davis and Desmond Arias on background vocals for 2 songs which was an excellent idea. They’re both singers from The Fortunate Few project as well.
