Robert Silvester On the Making Of “Lost in the City”

Can you tell us about the inspiration behind "Lost in the City" and the story it tells?

The verses are intentionally reflective, with a sense of mystery and longing, while the chorus contrasts with a more upbeat, almost ironic feel, which I think helps to bring a bit of tension into the track. Lyrically, “Lost in the City” tells the story of a young couple who have an argument while out in the city. After the fight, the guy is left searching in the crowded streets, unsure of how to find his way back to her. The verses capture that sense of wandering and uncertainty, while the chorus offers a shift in mood, almost as if the music is reacting to the emotional chaos of the moment.

How did you approach the arrangement and composition of the music for this song?

The recording process was a bit unconventional. We experimented by recording multiple vocal tracks in different rooms around the studio and layering them on top of one another. The result gives the song a haunting, atmospheric quality that fits the story and mood I was aiming for.

How do you feel "Lost in the City" represents your artistic identity?

As a solo artist, my work is often introspective, drawing inspiration from old memories to shape my lyrics. My sound blends downtempo, lofi elements, and dissonant piano harmonies, creating a mix of melancholy and fond nostalgia.

Can you share a bit about your musical background and the journey that led you to where you are today?

I've been drawn to music since I was young, creating and performing in bands, I'm currently playing drums in the band Trummerkind.

When it comes to lyrics, I've always enjoyed writing stories and poems, which I believe has shaped my storytelling style in my tracks. That said, I’ve never felt confined to one style or genre. As my music has evolved, I feel I’ve now developed my own unique sound that blends all these influences.

What’s the most important message or feeling you want to convey through your music?

The most important feeling I want to convey through my music is the ability to pull listeners into a journey, allowing them to escape the chaos of the world and immerse themselves in a different story, even if just for a few minutes. I want them to experience and enjoy the present through a new narrative.
