It isn’t the first time Maida Rose is being compared to Beach House and it won’t be the last time. The dream-pop duo of Roos Meijer and Javièr den Leeuw creates a transient mood-filled sonic experience that spans from soft-edged psychedelia to a sweet summer melancholy. Tales of Adolescence is a collection of 11 songs, revolving around intricate moments and tender vulnerabilities.

There’s nothing about Maida Rose that feels like a new band. The rich story and history that naturally emerges in their sound feel like a band that has been on the music scene since the 90s. Gentle guitars, silky lush soundscapes, and Meijer’s moody vocal with delightful nuance. They make it so effortless to fall in love with the sonic world they created.

“Fallen” is an ethereal timeless classic, drifting from the sky like a feather with an innocent, angelic touch of grace. The anthemic track explores melodies that are familiar as if they have been around for a long time, but at the time feels refreshing in its contemporary sounds. Written back in 2019 when Meijer moved to study in London, the track is peppered with lyrical allusions to William Blake, hinging on the binary of falling in love and falling out of love.

The shimmering “I Remember” invites audiences into a moment of pauce where time has stopped in-between motions until being rebooted again. The reverberant sound clouds fold you in, gently transforming the atmosphere with its immersive, intricate colors, documenting the aftermath of hopeful devastation.

Maida Rose touches on feelings that are often ignored or overlooked. Tales of Adolescence is a record that is worth savoring. “Wherever I Am” yearns to explore what the world has to offer, while “We Both Know” reflects on an out-of-body moment before reaching a collective decision to step into the unknown with a partner. “Within” sings about the ecstasy of unconditional love in the face of distance.

“Since this was our debut album, we still had the luxury of taking forever to finish it; the world didn’t know us yet so weren’t waiting for the release,” said Maida Rose, ‘It feels really special to have this collection of work, that originated and grew in our final years of adolescence and the intimate friendship we shared during this time. For us, this album will be like a photo album of our past that we can look into to have a melancholic revisit of a previous life, and for the world, it will hopefully be a symbol for a time in their life as well, and an introduction to the world of Maida Rose”.
