Reina Mora On the Making Of “WEEDS (Elated Remix)”

What was the initial spark or idea that led to the creation of "WEEDS (Elated Remix)?"

The producer, Elated, heard the original version of “Weeds” at the coffee shop we both frequent, he then reached out to me on social media asking if he could do a Remix of it. I’ve never done EDM but am open to all genres so I said Yes. Once I heard it I loved it so much that I decided not only to release it but also to create a music video for it that will be released in January.

Can you share any interesting or unique musical elements or production techniques used in "WEEDS (Elated Remix)?"

I like resampling a lot. In Ableton, you can convert audio to chords or melody notes. So I used the original piano and converted it to make big violin chords in the second verse. The main melody I also converted so I could turn it into a more EDM synth pluck to play again later in the final chorus and outro. It’s a simple but effective tool for being able to change audio samples into totally different instruments! (Elated’s Response to Production)

What impact do you hope this track will have on your audience?

I hope that the catchy, upbeat nature of the remix, blended with the heartfelt lyrics of the original will not only attract a more diverse audience, but also find a light and happiness in the darkest of situations.

What is your songwriting process like? How do you usually start crafting a new song?

There isn’t a tried and true process to my songwriting. Sometimes a lyric comes to me, other times a melody or beat gets stuck in my head, and it can even stem from an idea that I want to explore.

What do you find most rewarding about co-writing with others?

I love working through ideas with other artists, taking them into deep and vulnerable places to bring out some universal truths and crafting a song that will touch people the way it touches us.
