Regan Pierce On the Making Of ‘SPACE’

What was the initial spark or idea that led to the creation of 'SPACE?'

I knew I wanted to make an EP for a while, but it all started when my debut single "Please Don't Wake Me Up" was created. The track was written about an ex-girlfriend I had at the time, so it only made sense to continue the EP off of that song. I initially wanted to make the whole EP about losing someone or something that you love and learning to move on from it. So in one way ‘SPACE’ can be seen as a road trip of heartbreak and losing yourself for a while until you find your way back to earth and falling in love again. But the overall genesis of ‘SPACE’ is revolved around some of the worst times in my life. These are for example times when I had to deal with depression, anxiety, loneliness, and addictions.

Which song do you like the best and why?

It's very hard for me to pick a favorite song off the EP, every song has its own individual meaning and every song has a personal value. But “Eyes” is probably the track that I enjoy the most. It's a track that I wrote for my niece for her baptism, and it's about unconditional love and support. I know how bad life can get sometimes, so I wanted to make a song for her that describes that I will always be there for her no matter what!

How does 'SPACE' fit into your overall artistic vision?

‘SPACE’ is packed with emotions, no matter if the songs are sad, happy, or angry it's emotions I will continuously involve in my future music. It's also packed with dreamy reverberated guitar melodies and countermelodies, simplistic yet unique drum arrangements and simple bass lines. And I can see myself working with the styles I've included in the EP for many years to come.

Can you share a bit about your musical background and the journey that led you to where you are today?

I have always been very interested in music, it has always been the only thing that would help me through hard times. I used to lock myself in my room playing video games all day while listening to music to block out the struggles of my everyday life. Later on, I started writing poems in a notebook about my feelings which later on would become lyrics for songs.

I wrote lyrics for beats I found on YouTube, but after some time of just writing lyrics to things that would've never become my own songs, I started learning instruments such as guitar, bass guitar, piano, and drums to one day be able to make my very own music. Later on, I looked into music production, and now I'm at the point where I've released quite a small collection of songs that I'm very proud of.

Where do you find inspiration for your songs or musical ideas?

I get most of my inspiration for my music from my own life, every song I make is revolved around experiences I have been through. A lot of my music has very heartfelt and depressing lyrics because I find it easier to write about the bad times than the good times. But I want to make happier music in the future as well.

The other part of my inspiration comes from the artists that I look up to. I grew up listening to 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s music, and I am very inspired by artists such as Radiohead, David Bowie, The Cure, The Beatles, 2Pac and Michael Jackson. I also try to mix styles from my own generation into my music. Artists such as Post Malone, Machine Gun Kelly, YUNGBLUD, Lil Peep, Bon Iver, Phoebe Bridgers and Shawn Mendes have also inspired my music a lot.
