Playground Circus On the Making Of “Walking on Sunshine (Roxy Edition)”

Can you share any interesting or unique musical elements or production techniques used in "Walking on Sunshine (Roxy Edition)?"

On this song, we wanted to capture a more raw, not heavily processed sound. So with that in mind, we did the production accordingly. John, our singer, does most of our productions so his orders were clear. Make us sound like it's 1995!!

What was the initial spark or idea that led to the creation of "Walking on Sunshine (Roxy Edition)?"

Roxy was an incredibly cute dog owned by a friend of ours. John would see Roxy and our friend Travis almost every day at the local pub where he used to work at the time. Unfortunately, Roxy got ill and eventually died. At one of John’s conversations with Travis about Roxy shortly after she passed away, Travis mentioned how she would get super excited every time the “Walking On Sunshine” song would go on the radio or on one of his Spotify playlists.

So, the same weekend John went into the studio and recorded a version of the song as a surprise to our friend. At that moment we didn't even have in mind to release it, we all loved the song though, so we decided to re-record it and make an official release.

Have you noticed any particular interpretations or connections that listeners have made with this single?

Most of the people have connected this song with summer. The song though is about someone missing their loved ones and how they anticipate to see them again, and eventually “Walking on Sunshine” when they do. Even the initial video was shot in gloomy London to showcase if we're not mistaken, the controversy between the title of the song and what it is actually about.

We pretty much see this pattern continuing. We have been touring most of the summer and every time we play this song people are almost ready to get in their swimsuits and start parting on the beach!!
We love the impact and the energy this song has and we are very happy that people perceive it this way!!

How do you continuously grow and evolve as a band?

Honestly by not trying too hard!

What we mean by that is, that we make music first and foremost to please ourselves! If we're happy dancing and "mosh pitting" to our music then that's half the battle won! We feel confident that we can go out and make other people do the same when listening to our music!

It's like a big party!
People will dance their shoes off to a DJ who's giving 100% of his soul to the night, and we are the DJs of our music!

Can you share a memorable experience from a collaboration that enriched your music?

I think working with each other actually enriched our music a lot. We are both coming from extremely different musical backgrounds. El was always into Black Metal and Electronic Industrial stuff, and John is a punk rock kid on his skateboard. Writing music together the past 10 years and trying to bridge these two worlds is always fun and challenging that brings new elements to our music.
