Peter Spacey On the Making Of “How Can I?”

How does "How Can I?" reflect your musical journey and growth as an artist?

"How Can I?" is the second single from my upcoming debut album, marking my evolution from a producer known for immersive electronic soundscapes into a singer-songwriter. This track bridges my signature dance-oriented beats with singer-songwriting, creating a dynamic blend of vibrant production and heartfelt lyrical storytelling. It follows my first single, “It’s Nothing (Something),” continuing the journey of integrating emotional depth with rhythmic energy.

Was there any challenges that you encountered while making the track?

Finding the balance between the emotional core of the lyrics and the energy of the production was a key challenge. Additionally, crafting the visual representation to enhance the meaning of the song was both playful and deliberate. I wanted the visuals to bring the lyrics and emotions to life while embracing a layer of colorful, fun elements that add another dimension to the experience.

What was your favorite moment in making the music video?

The playfulness and flow of the visual layer were a joy to create, especially with the vibrant, 90s-inspired aesthetic. There’s a certain charm and humor in how the elements come together, which felt like a natural extension of the song’s energy. The colorful and dynamic visuals added a lighthearted yet impactful dimension to the project.

Can you share a bit about your musical background and the journey that led you to where you are today?

My musical journey began in my father’s studio in the 90s, where he worked as a singer-songwriter, composer, and producer. Growing up surrounded by drum machines, synthesizers, and the art of composition, I absorbed the fundamentals of songwriting, production, and creating immersive soundscapes.

I grew up immersed in music, starting with classical and jazz piano, which later expanded to DJing (around 16) and electronic production.

Over the years, I’ve performed at festivals, clubs, and venues worldwide, sharing stages and opening for artists like Masego and Anomalie. My work has been featured by brands such as PlayStation, HBO, Tesla, and Vogue. I’ve also been a featured artist in campaigns for Converse, Mitsubishi, and Waves Audio, among others.

Now, my artistry merges electronic grooves with heartfelt songwriting and vibrant visual elements, creating a multidimensional experience that bridges sound, storytelling, and visual artistry. This evolution reflects my passion for blending the emotional depth of lyrical expression with the immersive energy of electronic music.

How do you stay inspired and motivated to continue pushing boundaries in your art?

Inspiration these days comes from emotions and experiences, as well as exploring the intersection of sound and visuals. Being in nature and urban settings fuels my creativity in different ways.

Motivation, on the other hand, comes from the cycle of creating and sharing. Whether it’s performing for audiences or seeing my music integrated into other projects, these moments feed back into my work, inspiring me to keep pushing forward.
