nighTime On the Making Of “Animals”
What was the initial spark or idea that led to the creation of "Animals?"
There are two components in Animals that inspired it's creation: the drowning rain at the start/end, and the heavily distorted guitar melody in the middle of the song which is meant to mimic the sound of thunder.
What impact do you hope "Animals" will have on your audience?
I hope that listeners will recognize the distinctive sound that I am trying to convey, which I refer to as "nocturnal dreamstate." nighTime's music and visuals were inspired to evoke a dreamlike haze for listeners, a semiconscious state. I recommend listening late at night.
What do you like the best about "Animals?"
I always picture a rainy night when listening to Animals. I love that it is able to paint a scene for me.
Can you describe your typical creative process when composing music? How do you usually start a new piece?
All of my ideas start in the middle of the night. I prefer to wait until morning to sleep if I can. There is something special about the night's quiet that influences me deeply. New songs usually start with a simple melody or unique sound, which I begin to expand on and develop new ideas as it begins to open up.
How do you approach composing with the audience in mind? Are there ways you aim to connect with listeners through your music?
I construct each song's visuals as a reflection of the emotion I felt during its creation. And I hope that I can connect with the audience through these emotions. We have also shaped our live performance as an emotional experience, as each song is performed differently than the original recording, with unexpected transitions between each and audio samples of thought-provoking quotes spliced throughout.
