Nicolaas Walle On the Making Of “The Irony Of Fate”
What was the creative process like for this particular single?
It was a remote process taking place in The Hague, Netherlands and also in Austria, where Lisa (the singer) lives.
Can you talk about any collaborations you had while making "The Irony Of Fate?"
I made all of the instrumental music for the song, including performing, recording, mixing and mastering. Lisa wrote the lyrics and vocal melody and performed and recorded the vocal parts remotely from Austria and sent them to me.
Can you describe the emotions or feelings you hope this single evokes in listeners?
It has a sweet, slightly melancholy feel to it. I hope people relate to the sentiment in a positive and constructive way.
What are some of the biggest challenges you have faced as a musician, and how did you overcome them?
I think the biggest challenges I've faced are from trying to do everything alone. It's easier in the studio than it is live or when it comes to promotion and the business side of music. From being in several bands, I have learned that working with others makes things better ultimately. However, another struggle is to coordinate the availability of multiple people, which limits the spontaneity at times when large groups are involved.
Are there any unconventional techniques you've experimented with that led to interesting results?
Too many to list, but as one example, I've found field recording to be a very inspirational and creative starting point for more ambient pieces.
