MOTE On the Making Of “Torn Of Wind”

How does "Torn Of Wind" differ from your previous work?

It's darker. It's more moody. There is more of an edge. I think I have gotten to a place in my work where I can more clearly communicate what I feel and so what comes through is just more real.

Were there any challenges or obstacles you faced while creating this single?

Yes. I have been working with a trio in Berlin for the last year. Basically the band fell apart while we were attempting to record this single and a few other songs. It was difficult. We parted ways on good terms, but it was unexpected. It worked out for the very best I feel though. I got lucky and found a studio I could quickly record the music on my own in while I was in London this summer. I'm still working as I trio live, but the project basically came back to just being me, which for now feels right.

How does "Torn Of Wind" fit into your overall artistic vision?

For me, being creative is always an exercise in learning about yourself. You always learn something you didn't know before when you push yourself to make something new. So this song is representative of that process. I think now I'm starting to really hit a stride in getting to where my vision directs me more readily. For instance, I am interested in creating characters, sort of like Bowie, or Boy Harsher, where there is a theatrical aspect behind the stories and sounds. I am more in touch with cinematic and visual elements now.

What do you enjoy most about performing live and connecting with your audience?

Just what you said, connecting. We have a unique opportunity to lift one another up when we are in concert together. It's the best thing on Earth as far as I can tell.

What are your future goals or aspirations as a musician?

I want to keep getting better, keep growing as an artist and performer. I do have a very theatrical side which I'd like to keep exploring in tandem with the music. I want to tour a lot and play at all the big rock festivals. No matter what though, I just want to keep working for as long as possible. Music is everything to me.
